1881 – Ruhstaller

1881 copyIn this post-recession era of American capitalism, I think it is responsible for consumers and manufacturers alike to seek out quality products in their own backyard. Several brewers come to mind when I think of the symbiotic relationship between the California farmer and local brewers, but with a 132 year old tradition of producing beer exclusively with California-grown ingredients, Ruhstaller Beer is about a century ahead of the curve.

Ruhstaller1881, marks my first review of a canned craft beer. There is no question that many still hold galvanized opinions regarding the inferior quality of cans. However, New Belgium, Oskar Blues, Ballast Point, and others have joined over fifty companies in the canning movement. Companies like Golden Road have released a wide array of beers exclusively in cans and seem to be doing just fine. After all, how many craft beer drinkers would even drink from the bottle? In most cases, the only way to fully experience a beer is in appropriate glassware. That said, let’s check our preconceptions at the door and talk about what really matters, the beer inside.

A deep amber pour produces a half finger of off white foamy head that reduces to a ring leaving little lace, which is right in line with my expectations for a red ale. The nose is an interesting collection of pine and grapefruit (from the cascade hops), as well as some pronounced, but nice bitterness from the columbus and chinook hops. 1881 seems earthier than most reds I’ve experienced. Taste is right in line with the nose, led at first by a smooth creamy caramel malt and roasted grain giving way to a nice hop finish.

I find drinkability to be high, mostly due to a mouthfeel that begins with a big rich opening and coasts to a thin clean finish. Carbonation is light for a red and body overall is medium. A 4-pack of these 16oz. cans will run you about $12 at Whole Foods or local bottle shops. In my opinion that’s a damned good pint for a mere $3.00.
