Firestone Walker – Union Jack

Firestone Walker - Union JackAs a follow-up to my last post on Firestone Walker Double Jack, I felt it only fair to give the beer it’s derived from, Union Jack, a review as well.

Union Jack is a west coast IPA that David Walker called “an American-style India pale ale that represents a flavorful twist on our British brewing heritage, as well as our singular focus on pale ales” (The name of the beer being nod to David Walker’s British heritage). It took Firestone Walker a full year to fine tune the recipe, with the head brewer crediting Russian River’s IPAs as an inspiration. It uses more than four pounds of hops per barrel in the brewing process and is then double dry hopped with Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Simcoe hops, giving it an abundance of the grapefruit and citrus hop aroma and flavor. This brew has also won several gold and silver medals from both the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.
I picked up a pint of Union Jack at Far Bar during their Firestone Walker Night in June. The pour is I golden yellow with a quickly dissipating bubbly head. The aroma is a strong citrus hop with a hint mellow pine and a bit of sweet malt in the background. The mouthful is pretty light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. The flavor starts with a slight yeastiness that moves to a strong citrus hop and finishes with a subtlety sweet malt with a hint of pine. The aftertaste is a lingering bitter citrus hop, somewhere between grapefruit and orange peel.

I really enjoyed this IPA because of Its great hop characteristic and a good malt to help balance it out. Though, not as hop forward as some of my usual standbys, it has a nice crisp quality that isn’t going to wear your palate out. I also recently got to have Union Jack on cask, which if you ever get the chance to I would highly recommend as the cask pour has a great texture and really makes the flavors stand out. Union Jack can be purchased, in 22oz or 12oz six packs, at almost every beer retailer in LA and even most major supermarkets as well as on tap pretty regularly around town.
