Tony’s Darts Away – Vegan Chili Cook-off 2014 – UPDATED

chilicookoff_short copyComing up on March 2nd, Tony’s Darts Away will feature its second annual Vegan Chili Cook-off. Stop by and witness five teams of chefs competing for “ultimate culinary bragging rights”.

This year’s line-up includes well known chefs from across LA, including returning competitor, Randy Clemens author of the Sriracha Cookbook series.

Joining Clemens in the chili showdown will be Chef Erick Simmons of Mohawk Bend; Greg Daniels of Haven Collective; local favorite Chili John’s as well as Zel and Ruben Allen of Vegetarians in Paradise.

Judges include Chef Tal Ronnen of Crossroads Kitchen and author of The Conscious Cook, Caroline Pardilla of CarolineonCrack.com and Cathy Chaplin of GastronomyBlog.com and author of Food Lovers’ Guide to Los Angeles.

tonys-dart-away-1Admission to the event is $10 and includes five 3oz tastes of chili plus a ballot to a vote for the People’s Choice winner.

The chefs will have their mouthwatering chili underway when attendees arrive at 12 p.m. Winners of the Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice awards will be announced at the closing ceremony, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

As always, you can count on Tony’s to pair these spicy dishes with a worthy offering of great IPA’s and more. Topping this year’s tap list will be Pliny the Elder, Nitro Sculpin, and the next in Noble’s new “Showers” Single Hop IPA series; Amarillo Showers. You can find more info on the Vegan Chili Cook-off and future Tony’s Darts Away events on their Facebook page.

UPDATE
1799935_10152306213827853_1018589516_o copyThough it seems the Sculpin on Nitro didn’t make an appearance, Amarillo Showers, Grape Ape IPA, and Get Up Offa That Brown on Cask were among the beer highlights of the event. Tony’s darts Away was as packed as I’ve ever seen it, perhaps even surpassing the crowds at their Third Anniversary party.

The chilis were all fantastic, and surpisingly unique takes on what Vegan Chili can be. From TDA’s version of Black Eyed Peas with Green Chiles, to a minestrone-like offering of robust vegetables from Vegetarians in Paradise, each chili was a completely different style.

This year’s winners were Erik Simmons of TDA in the judges’ category (And I’ll add the only chili present that made me break a sweat) and Greg Daniel’s of Haven Gastropub took the People’s Choice with his diner-style ground chili.

The results are in! This year’s Judges’ Choice goes to our very own Chef Erick Simmons! The People’s Choice award goes to Chef Greg Daniels of Haven Gastropub! Thanks to all who partcipated and helped make today a success!

Dave
