It’s not every day a new player shows up in the Los Angeles beer scene. So when I got wind that a popular brewery from the Northwest was making its way to Southern California I couldn’t resist checking it out.
Double Mountain Brewery, based in Hood River Oregon, opened its doors in 2007 and has steadily been expanding in the Pacific Northwest. They’ve received pretty high scores on the usual beer rating sites, BeerAdvocate and RateBeer, with none of their year round bottled beers getting below a 3.7 out of 5. One interesting thing about them is that they bottle their beer in 500ml bottles (like many European breweries) that, in a perfect world, they’d like to have you return to them to be reused. Sadly, it looks like Southern California will not be participating in this program.
I was lucky enough to sample Double Mountain’s bottled beer line up at Artisan Ales, who will be distributing their beer in LA, prior to the official launch. The line up includes Kölsch (a Northwest twist, ie hopped up, on the traditional German style), Vaporizer (a dry hopped pale ale made with Challenger hops grown on a single farm in the Yakima Valley), Hop Lava (an extremely tasty Northwest IPA), and IRA (an India red ale with an interesting mix of malt and hop flavors). My favorite of the four would have to be the Vaporizer, as I am a sucker for a good dry hopped pale, which kind of reminded me of Drakes 1500 with a completely different hop profile.
Bottles and kegs will be making their way out to a good number of retailers and bars in the LA area in the coming weeks. And if we are really lucky, we may see some of Double Mountain’s seasonal releases, like the Fa La La La La winter warmer, make their way down to LA. If you can’t wait for your local beer destination to get some, Sunset Beer Co. is throwing a Double Mountain launch party on September 19 2013 at 6pm. They’ll have bottles for sale and kegs on tap for in-house enjoyment.
