Drake’s Brewing – Total Recall

Drake's Brewing - Total RecallHere’s another live review from Far Bar’s Drake’s Brewing night. This one is another barrel aged beer named Total Recall.

Total Recall is a blend of their imperial stout, Drakonic, and their Amber Ale that was aged in port barrels for two years. In the past Drake’s have aged both these styles of beers separately in port barrels, but for this one they wanted to see how a blend would do. Like the Cuvée du Mallard, this one is pretty rare one because of Drake’s barrel program’s size.

The pour is a very dark cherry with no head to speak of. The aroma has a very strong malt with notes of vanilla and cedar and a port undertone. Medium body with just a hint of carbonation. It starts with a very distinctive port flavor that moves to a sweet bready malt that hits a slight cedar note and has a dry finish. The aftertaste is very much port with a red wine flavor and a good burn.

This was an interesting one. A bit to port-ish for me, but definitely an interesting one. The amber gets a bit lost in the mix, but I get that hint of cedar from it. If you want to try this beer, GET YOUR ASS TO FAR BAR (sorry I had to make at least one Total Recall joke).
