Sierra Nevada – On The Rocks Scotch Ale

20130110-232002.jpgA quick review for a wee Scottish ale. This beer hails from the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp, which brings together people from the beer industry to meet up and make interesting one off beers. This particular brew was from Beer Camp #87 and is a scotch ale brewed with caraway seeds.

The pour is a dark reddish brown with a small amount of bubbly head ringing the glass. The aroma comes off with a strong caramel malt and a bit of doughiness with the slightest hint of sweetness. Very lively carbonation, giving it an almost creamy sensation given the medium body. The flavor starts with strong bready malt that’s almost like rye bread that moves to a subtle caramel note and finishes dry earthy note with a hint of licorice.20130110-232523.jpg The aftertaste has a lingering rye bread flavor with a tinge of sweetness and a mild burn in the back of the throat.

Overall, it’s a pretty good scotch ale but nothing that I’d be lining up to have again. Which is good, because this one is a very limited release one off which may never see LA ever again. The one thing I did very much enjoy about this beer was the way the caraway seed came through in the flavor, giving it an interesting rye-like characteristic. If this sounds like your kind of brew, run on down to Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood to give it a try.
